Calculators: Handheld: Brother Procal 408AY

Size (approx):

100mm (max) x 155mm x 45mm (max)  (w,h,d)
Weight 242g excluding  batteries.
Power: 6.0V DC, 4xAA size.  Also accepts adapter (4086, 6V 0.8W) through top right hand side socket.  Alkaline batteries give about 12 hours use whilst manganese are quoted at 4 hours.
Case: Matt beige and brown plastic case with painted metal keyboard surround. The blue logo and reversed out model number and switch labels are on this metal plate.  Additional white lettering is printed on the display filter for digit position and error flags.
Display: 8+1 digit green VFD, with the ninth digit used to indicate negative and overflow indictors
Features: Basic four function with percentages.  Switched constant function selected by on/off switch.
Age: 1973
Manufacturer: Brother Industries Ltd., Made in Japan.  Serial No. E4028287
Comments: Lovely solid feeling large calculator with buttons rather like an old typewriter.  Original black leatherette case has small carrying handle and popper closing.  The logic is surprisingly good with no major bugs and good recovery.

Components: 1 x cpu: NEC uPD273C K3X416 (28 pin 0.6" DIL)
1 X VFD unit: round faced single glass unit: ISA DP90A HC
3 x transistors
9 x diodes
1 x rectifier
23 x capacitors
2 x resistor arrays
11 x resistors
1 x transformer
Boards: The main board (BP-2126-1 JC1-AK) sits lose in the front compartment and is connected to a small vertical board that secures the display unit via 19 small link wires.  This main board also acts as the keyboard connector board.
Construction: To open, remove the screw from beneath the battery cover.  The back will easily lift off - hinge to the top then left.

Logic comments: Clear (CL) clears the last number entered and recovers the overflow for further calculations
There is no input overflow suppression, keying in a ninth digit results in an error that is cleared by using (CL)
There is a switched constant facility using "K" on all functions
To work out a percentage discount (say 5% of 20) key in (C)(2)(0)(X)(-)(5)(%)(%), to mark up just drop the (-) key
An error results in the display "C" in the ninth digit, "E" if negative, overflows are recoverable using (CL)
Negative number is shown by a "-" sign on the ninth digit
Quite bug-free

Brother 408AY manual

Left is a 12pp, one colour booklet covering instructions in four different languages.  A very clear pictogram on the inside front cover makes things easy to identify.  Useful instructions for "reverse calculation" (inverting equations and percentage discount and mark-up.  Size is 185mm x 110mm.
