Calculators: Handheld: Canon Palmtronic LD-81

Canon Palmtronic LD-81

Size (approx): 75mm x 130mm x 20mm (max)  (w,h,d)
Weight 112g excluding batteries

Power:

3V DC, 2 x AA size batteries, 0.2W.  Does accept an adapter (undefined) through socket on the top side to the far left.  On/off switch is on the left hand side, about three quarters up.
Case: Two-piece case in black plastic with subtly snake-skin type markings on the rear and sides. Brushed aluminium keyboard surround and simple key colour scheme are quite classy. Painted metal plate inset into the top has company name and model number. Keys are squishy and very Casio-like; positive to use. Green display filter still shows the digits clearly.
Display: 8 digit green VFD, ninth digit for minus sign and error flags
Features: Standard four functions, percentages and square root
Age: 1975
Manufacturer: Canon Inc. made in Japan. Serial No. 552682
Comments:

Clean, simple and solid built calculator. Bright green display is easy to see even in daylight – helped by the lively cycling, especially on the square root. Key colour scheme is just right.

Components: 1 x cpu: Texas TMS0855NC A7544 (Week 44 of 1975) 28 pin DIL
1 x 9 digit round single tube VFD display
2 x transistors
5 x diodes
5 x capacitors
2 x resistor arrays
4 x resistors
1 x transformer; CD-1012 TDK Japan
Boards: The main keyboard is attached to the front by one screw.  The main cpu board (Ref: Canon X67-6479-03) is connected by 18 stiff copper connectors.  A third small sub-assembly board houses the DC adapter input circuitry.
Construction: Starting from the behind and the top, gently squeeze in the front of the case to unlock the internal lugs.  You have to remove the on/off switch and the adapter socket to fully open.

Logic comments: (Cl) is used to clear the last number entered and (C) to clear the whole calculator.
There is automatic constant on all four functions
Input overflow is suppressed, inputting a ninth digit is ignored
Negative sign is shown in the far left (ninth) digit to allow full eight digit negative numbers
Divide by zero shows zero and "u" in the far left (ninth) digit and is recoverable using (Cl)
Overflow is shown by "u" (or "o" if negative) in the far left (ninth) digit and is recoverable using (Cl)
Negative square roots are allowed. Try finding the root of zero; display will answer "0.00000000"
