Calculators: Handheld: Canon LD-8M 2 (Palmtronic)

Size (approx):

74mm x 130mm x 21mm (max) (w,h,d)
Weight 114g excluding batteries
Power: 3.0V DC, 2 x AA size batteries. Accepts an adapter/charger (DC 3V, 0.2W) through a socket on the top side, on the far left.  The on/off switch is on the left hand side, in line with the Canon sticker.
Case: Lightweight calculator made from a two-piece patterned and glossy black plastic case.  The oversized green plastic display filter is flat and raised slightly.  Within this a black printed metallic gold sticker sits in its own recess with the brand and model number.  The keyboard surround is a brushed aluminium panel that wraps around the bottom edge.  The familiar Canon blue and yellow keys are medium travel with a soft click and work quite well.
Display: 8 digit green VFD with a ninth digit for negative, overflow and memory indication
Features: Standard four functions with percentages, square root and four-function memory.
Age: 1975
Manufacturer: Canon Inc, made in Japan, serial number 643999.
Comments: Basic calculator with a bright if small display.  The logic is quite good, only let down by the lack of recovery.  Original case is soft black plastic with an open top and half-moon cut-outs front and back.  It has Canon embossed on the front and Japan on the back.

Components: 1x cpu: Hitachi HD36264 5K13 (October 1975) 28 pin DIL, 0.6" width black plastic
1 x 9 digit VFD: single tube round front face: Futaba 9-CT-24, 5J (September 1975)
2 x transistors
5 x diodes
8 x capacitors
3 x resistors
2 x resistor array
1 x transformer: TDK CD1013 Japan
Boards: The main cpu board (Canon  X67-6481-02) floats free, attached to the keyboard assembly which is fixed to the front with a screw and plastic lugs.  The two are joined by 20 strong copper wires.  There is an additional piggy-back board with the power supply components on it.
Construction: Held together by internal lugs only you have to be careful not to damage the calculator trying to open it.  The best way I found is by squeezing in the front section along the sides and top.  Eventually the back will lift off.

Logic comments: The (CI) key is used to cancel the last number entered whilst the (C) key clears the whole calculator
Input overflow is suppressed, inputting a ninth digit is ignored
There is automatic constant on multiply and divide only
Overflow shows the result and “E” in the far left (ninth) digit and is not recoverable
Divide by zero shows zero and “E” in the far left (ninth) digit and is not recoverable
Negative numbers are shown with a "-" in the far left (ninth) digit thereby allowing full eight digit negative numbers
Square roots of negative numbers are not allowed and show the result with “E” in the far left (ninth) digit and is not recoverable
Memory store is indicated by “II” in the far left (ninth) digit
