Calculators: Handheld: Casio Memory A-1 (aka H-814)

Size (approx): 74mm x 117mm x 18.5mm (max)  (w,h,d)
Weight 88g excluding batteries.
Power: 1.5V DC, 1 x AA size batteries.  Also accepts adapter (model AD-1S, 0.12W) through a top side socket on the left.   One Alkaline battery operates about 26 hours continuously.
Case: Solid and small square calculator.  Two piece plastic case, white base, dark brown top.  Large brushed aluminium keyboard surround.  Typical squishy but positive Casio keys.  On/off switch on the left side about in line with the display. Above the display there is raised make and model text and painted silver - and have survived very well.
Display: 8 digit blue VFD display - no ninth digit
Features: Basic four function with percentages, square root, change sign and three function memory.
Age: c1977
Manufacturer: Casio Computer Co. Ltd.  Made in Japan.  Model code H-814.  Serial number (in battery compartment) 0228559.
Comments: Nice little compact Casio that is let down by pretty poor logic; no error recovery, negative square roots, lack of a ninth digit and negative zero bug.   Original cover is black plastic leatherette, open top with half-moon cut-outs.  Has embossed Casio on the front and Made in Japan on the back.

Components: 1 x CPU: Hitachi HD36183 7G 23 (July 1977?)
1 x single tube, flat face 8-digit VFD display
1 x transistor
4 x diodes
3 x resistors
5 x capacitors
1 x transformer
Boards: Keyboard board is attached to the front with six screws.  The main board (F8V -1A)is attached to this by 13 stiff wire connectors which can be hinged out.
Construction: Back is secured by one small screw on the lower left hand half.  After removing, gently prize the two halves apart making allowance for the on/off switch.

Logic comments: The Clear key (C) will clear last entry whilst the All Clear (AC) key resets the calculator
Overflow on the input of a number is suppressed
The constant function is used by pressing the operator twice for all operators
The negative sign is shown on the immediate left digit thereby limiting you to seven digit negative numbers.  However, if you type in an eight digit number and try to change sign; it is ignored.
Negative square roots are allowed
Divide by zero just shows "E." in the far left (first) digit and is not recoverable
Overflow jus shows "E." in the far left (first) digit and is not recoverable
Memory storage is not indicated - you have to remember it.
This calculator suffers the "negative zero" bug; key in (1)(-)(2)(=) to give "-1" then key in (+)(1) to give "-0".

A1 Box Box is calculator sized at approx. 80mm x 140mm x 26mm and is printed in black and lime green. Made in Japan. A1 Manul Four language, black colour only manual is 100mm x 74mm.  20pp booklet is quite useful as it give loads of examples of calculations.
