Calculators: Handheld: Casio Personal-I (aka H-802)

Size (approx): 74mm x 123mm x 22mm  (w,h,d)
Weight 108g including batteries.
Power: 3.0V DC, 2xAA size, 0.2W.  Also accepts adapter (AD-2S) through a socket on the top side to the far left.   The on/off switch is on the left hand side  in line with the word Casio.
Case: Two piece plastic case with a smooth white base and matt black front.  A slightly tilted display escutcheon also houses a metallic sticker printed black and blue.  The neutral, slightly tilted display filter gives a clear image although my example is a bit dim. The keys are the typical squishy Casio ones that have a long travel and work rather well.  A compact little calculator that fits neatly in your palm.
Display: 8 digit blue VFD with no ninth digit.
Features: Standard four functions with percentages and square root.
Age: 1976
Manufacturer: Casio Computer Co. Ltd.  Made in Japan.  Serial number 7246377 on sticker inside battery compartment.
Comments: Well built compact design which is let down by the lack of a ninth digit and negative square roots.  Also has the negative zero bug found in many Casio's.

Components: 1 x cpu: Hitachi HD36145 6E11 (May 1976), 28 pin DIL, 0.6" width
1 x 8 digit VFD; single tube round face: LD8120S
1 x transistor
5 x diodes
8 x capacitors
4 x resistors
2 x resistor arrays
1 x transformer; 6A1 CD-1206 TDK
Boards: Main board (D8S-1A) floats free and is connected by 12 copper wires to the keyboard board (D8F-E4A).  The latter is secured to the front by 5 screws.  There is a small piggy back board module with the transformer and associated components.
Construction: Remove the two screws from the inside of the battery compartment.  The switch side has two lugs which means you hinge out the other side first by popping the bottom right lug and push the front assembly to the left.  Quite difficult so be very careful.

Logic comments: The (C) button is used to clear last entry of a number and (AC) to clear the whole calculator.
Overflow on number input is suppressed, typing in a nine digit number ignores the ninth digit.
There is selectable automatic constant on all multiply and divide only by double hitting the operator; i.e. (3)(X)(X)(=) gives "9".
An overflow error is flagged with an "E" in the first (right most) digit, negative or positive.  Number is not recoverable.
Divide by zero shows an  "E" which is also not recoverable.
A round off switch and fixed two-decimal point notation is available.
Square roots of negative numbers are allowed
There is a "negative zero" bug; try (1)(-)(2)(=) to give "-1" then (+)(1)(=) gives "-0"
Negative numbers are flagged by a "-" sign in the immediate left digit, limiting you to seven digit negative numbers.

box

The box measures 150mm x 87mm and is 38mm deep.  Printed in green and black it has the model number H-802 on the top end.  It is a flip-opening top and fold-sealed bottom.
