Cheaply built generic calculator from late 1976-77 period. The basic
case and structure is the same but it was customised with aluminium
panels, different chip-sets, boards and displays. Lesson on how to
cut costs. The board has an ETCO reference and they were all made in
Singapore. Click on the above images to see more detail on each one.
1. Make the main board double
sided so that the keyboard circuitry is on the same board as the cpu - and
surface-mount a standard IC to copy with this by bending the pins at right
angles.
2. Dispense with the battery connector and use two bits of metal instead
3. Don't bother with screws, seal the case with internal lugs only and fix
the board with melted posts - labour is cheap, components are not
4. Put no extra components in at all (successful with only the one Adman
model).
5. Make the on/off switch assembly an integral part of the circuitry on
the board.
Notice that the Texet
L-0831(I) uses the same IC as the Binatone and Adman L-0830T but it is a
larger package. At least they used a reverse polarity protection
diode - but as it looks stuck on as a bit of an after-thought it may be a
sign that they had issues with damaged returns.
