Calculators: Handheld: Hanimex BC900B

Hanimex BC900B

Size (approx): 84mm (max) x 136mm x 24mm (max)  (w,h,d)
Weight 140g excluding batteries

Power:

6V DC, 4 x AA size battery, 0.25W.  Also accepts adapter (undefined) through top side socket on the left.
Case: Sturdy brown and cream case with brushed aluminium keyboard surround.  Painted logo and model number on gray plastic display filter.  Flush buttons with very little travel have proved unreliable on this model.  Nice rounded edges make this pleasant to hold.
Display: 8 digit green VFD.
Features: Basic four function with percentages
Age: 1975
Manufacturer: Made in Hong Kong.  Serial number E-6 89959 (in battery compartment).
Comments:

Nice looking calculator but somewhat of a mystery. The original manual (with the correct model number) describes one extra button (the (D) for display recovery after auto-power down).  The manual uses the lovely phrase "Think and touch" use for the logic description.  Original black leatherette case has an extra pocket to fit the manual (and flap).

Components: 1 x cpu: [Square spiral design logo] EA 7055 a 7524 (week 24 of 1975), 28 pin DIL  0.6" width
1 x 9 digit VFD unit, single glass tube round faced
2 x transistors
0 x diodes
8 x resistors
2 x resistor array
7 x capacitors
1 x transformer
Boards: The keyboard assembly is a PCB (KA 1900 7055B 6S) with metal click-pads and is soldered to the battery terminals.  The keys remain in place on the front section of the calculator.  This PCB is attached to the main cpu board with 12 wires.
Construction: It is quite difficult to pop the lugs from the front section, there are two either side.  Not recommended as damage is likely.

Logic comments: The (CE/C) button is used once to clear entry of a number and a second time to clear.
Overflow on number input is suppressed
Divide by zero error is flagged by "00.000000", overflow error is not flagged by anything on my example.  Though the manual says that error is recoverable, my example is not.
There is automatic constant all operators which is a bit odd - (2)(X)(7)(=) 14, (3)(=) 21, usually it is the first number that is constant!
Negative numbers are flagged by a "-" sign in the immediate left hand digit. Thereby limiting negative numbers to seven digits.  However, you can have an eight digit negative number - the "-" just doesn't show !

Hanimex BC900B Manual

A 16 pp one colour manual which appears to cover a different version of this calculator - it has an extra (D) button. It is 132mm wide and 68mm high.   Quite good description of functions with marvellous "Think and touch" logic description.  Three pages blank to make your own notes.  Back page contains six Australian service centres and eight international ones - an obvious Australian manual.
