Calculators: Handheld: Litronix 2230 Memory

Size (approx): 80mm x 164mm x 11-20mm (max)  (w,h,d)
Weight 120g excluding batteries

Power:

4.5V DC, 3 x AA size batteries.  Does accept an adapter (4V DC, 300mW Ref. No. 102 for 100 volts and 104 for 230 volts) through socket on the right side. two thirds the way up.   Rare to have a key operated on/off system so early.
Case: Two-piece case is in "computer-style" beige matt plastic.  Very thin case around the keyboard area, a sloping red display filter leads towards the bulbous head.  Memory logo is painted and inset in the filter whilst an inset, angled aluminium pained panel shows the make and model number.  Pleasant key colours are finished off with brushed aluminium keyboard surround.  Extensive instruction panel on the back.  Keys are short travel with a positive click.
Display: 8 digit red LED with bubble lens, ninth digit for minus and decimal points.  A decimal point takes up a whole digit so nine are needed just to show a normal eight digit number.  Extra LED dot for memory flag.
Features: Standard four functions, percentages, change sign, square root and four function memory
Age: 197?
Manufacturer: Litronix, Inc., Cupertino, California, Assembled in Malaysia.  Serial No. 83647.
Comments:

Fabulous.  Weird thin keyboard design, fixed two decimal points (which get overridden), odd display characteristics make this a neat calculator.  Watch those digits cycle, especially on square roots.  Lovely clear display with wide angle of view, sound logic and a generally overall feel of quality make this a top dog!

Components: 1 x cpu: LIT 2302  28 pin  DIL
1 x display driver: LBC 1081 18 pin DIL
1 x nine digit bubble lens LED display
2 x transistors
0 x diodes
2 x capacitors
3 x resistors
1 x  transformer
Boards: The single board (Ref: Litronix 8300706-B) sits in the front of the case held by eight plastic lugs.
Construction: Remove the two screws at the back and the panel lifts away.

Logic comments: (C/on) is actually a (CE/C) key as well as an on key, i.e. used once to cancel the last number entered and a second time to clear the calculator.
There is automatic constant on all four functions
Input overflow is suppressed, inputting a ninth digit is ignored
Negative sign is shown in the immediate left hand digit, travelling into the ninth thereby allowing full eight digit negative numbers
Divide by zero shows flashing "Error" in the middle digits and is recoverable using (C/On)
Overflow is shown by a flashing result with a box around the decimal point not recoverable using (C/On)
The display of the decimal point takes up a whole digit as the point is in the middle of the lower "o".
Try this for an odd effect; key in 12345678 which is displayed as "12345678.", press change sign and watch as the display changes to "-12345678"
Calculator defaults to a display of "0.00" and stays in at least two decimal point mode until it has to change to display a correct result
Memory storage is indicated by a small red dot at the to right hand side of the display
Negative square roots are not allowed and result in a flashing "Error" in the middle digits and is recoverable using (C/On)
