Calculators: Handheld: Novus 850

Size (approx):

70mm x 125mm x 23mm (max) (w x h x d)
Weight 78g not including batteries.

Power: 9.0V DC using 1 x PP3 size battery.  Can accept an adapter (undefined) through a socket on the left side about half way up.
Case: The two-piece light buff matt plastic case has rounded edges and is very lightweight.  An extra stuck on keyboard surround panel is textured gold.  A slightly tilted red display filter makes the best of the small LEDs.  The small keys are short travel squishy type, my example suffers bounce a bit.  The top area has a small recess that houses a black printed gold metallic sticker with the model number.  A large sticker on the rear reminds you of the keying procedures.
Display: 8 digit red LED with bubble lens with a ninth digit for negative and error indicators
Features: Standard four functions
Age: 1975
Manufacturer: Novus – Consumer Products from National Semiconductor Corporation, 2900 Semiconductor Way, Santa Clara, California 95051 (USA).  Made in the USA, serial number 1787034.
Comments: Cheap feeling calculator under the brand name by National Semiconductor.  The rounded edges and the four assembly screws are the only things that help it.  Lack of recovery and constant is a nuisance but otherwise sound logic.  My particular example starts up with random results on the display so needs (CE/C) pressing first.  Minimal components, in fact just two ICs and a display!

Components: 1 x cpu: National Semiconductor NS 514 MM5737N, 24 pin DIL  0.6" width
1 x IC NS526 DS/DM8864N, 22 pin DIL 0.3" width (display driver)
1 x 9 digit bubble lens red LED; NS A1198 522
0 x transistors
0 x diodes
0 x resistors
0 x resistor array
0 x capacitors
0 x transformer
Boards: The keyboard assembly is attached to the front by numerous plastic rivets.  A 15-way ribbon cable joins to the main cpu board (M5 100205-G) which floats freely over the keyboard.
Construction: Remove the four screws from the rear and the calculator opens easily.

Logic comments: The (CE/C) key is used to cancel an entry whilst a second press clears the whole calculator
Input overflow is suppressed inputting an ninth digit is ignored
Negative numbers are shown with a "-" to the immediate left of a number travelling into the far left (ninth) digit thereby allowing full eight digit negative numbers
There is no constant function
Divide by zero shows "E0000000." and is not recoverable
Overflow shows the result with “E” in the far left (ninth) digit and is not recoverable
Oddly, the decimal point is not alight when you input a number
