Calculators: Handheld: Panasonic JE-8003U (aka 8003)

Size (approx):

70mm x 118mm x 21mm  (w,h,d)
Weight 90g excluding batteries

Power: 3.0V DC, 2 x AA size batteries, 0.4W.  It accepts an adapter (JL-046, 047 or 048) through a socket on the top side to the far left.
Case: Compact two-piece grey smooth plastic case with grip ridges on the sides.  Large front brushed aluminium panel is slightly raised.  A further raised section is printed black with the words Auto Constant.  This and the make/model number have survived very well.  The display has a flat, neutral filter and small grey escutcheon.   Subtle coloured keys are soft and squishy and have Casio-like surrounds.  The on/off switch is on the left side, in line with the display.  The back has a recessed panel labelled “name” for you to put your own sticker in.
Display: 8 digit blue VFD, with a ninth digit for minus and error indication.
Features: 4 function calculator with percentages and square roots
Age: 1977
Manufacturer: Matsushita Communication Industrial Co., Ltd, Yokohama, Japan.  Made in Japan.  Serial number on the inside of the battery cover is 72400875
Comments: Very high quality feel to this compact and pretty calculator.  Subtle grey, metal and blue colouring works very well.  Original soft black plastic cover is open toped and embossed with Panasonic Electronic Calculator.

Components: 1 x cpu: NEC D1801C H6634M (28 pin DIL)
1 x 9 digit VFD single tube flat face: Futaba 9ST-20A
2 x transistor
5 x diodes
5 x capacitors
2 x resistors
1 x transformer: TDK CT-1400 Japan
Boards: The keyboard board is fixed to the front by a dozen plastic rivets.  It connects to the main cpu board (ref 6126 6500) via a 15-way ribbon cable
Construction: Remove the single screw from the back and gently lift off the rear section.

Logic comments: The (CE) button is used to clear last entry of a number and the (C) clear the whole calculator.
Overflow on number input is not suppressed; typing in a nine-digit number gives an overflow error which is recoverable using (CE).
An overflow shows the result with a “C” (or “E” if negative) in the far left (ninth) digit and is recoverable using CE
Divide by zero results in a tall "C” in the far left (ninth) digit and is not recoverable.
There is automatic constant on all four functions
Negative square roots are allowed and give a negative result
Negative numbers are shown by a "-" in the immediate left hand digit travelling into the far left (ninth) digit to allow eight digit negative numbers.

box The box measures 78mm x 140mm and is 30mm deep so is just about bid enough for the calculator in its cover.  The front hinges to the right.  It is printed in one colour black.  No reference or origination text but there is a sticker on the top side with the calculator’s serial number.
