Calculators: Handheld: Sanyo CX-8031

Size (approx):

80mm x 150mm x 18mm (max)  (w,h,d)
Weight 134g excluding batteries

Power:

3V DC, 2 x AA size batteries, 0.3W.  It accepts an adapter (CU-15, 2.7V, 100mA) through socket on the top side to the far right.
Case: The two-piece case has a black base and silver spray painted top with a black matt keyboard surround.  A light green display filter lets in a bit too much ambient light but does have white printed numbers above the digits. A small plastic panel with logo is inset at the top and has raised silver printed lettering.  Bold coloured keys are squishy but quite positive to use.
Display: 8 digit green VFD, ninth digit for minus and memory signs and error flags
Features: Standard four functions, percentages and change sign.
Age: 197?
Manufacturer: Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. Serial No. 04602550 T, made in Japan.
Comments:

Solid feeling calculator that is surprisingly good condition; the silver has not worn at all on this example. Logic sound but lack of recovery and input overflow are annoying.  Square shaped black soft plastic case is open topped. Display is a little difficult to read as the filter lets in too much light.

Components: 1 x cpu: NEC µPD941C H54266,  28 pin DIL, 0.6" width
1 x nine digit flat faced VFD display
3 x transistors
6 x diodes
8 x capacitors
25 x resistors
1 x  transformer
Boards: The keyboard board is fixed to the front with 6 screws and attached to the CPU board by a 13 tied cables. The battery compartment is odd in that the two batteries point in the same direction which means wires are needed to cross over the terminals!
Construction: Remove the screw at the back.  Prize away the bottom first (two lugs) and you'll find the top section lifts off.

Logic comments: (CK) stands for Clear Key and is used to cancel the last number entered whilst (CA) (Clear All) is used to clear the whole calculator.
There is automatic constant on all four functions
Input overflow is not suppressed, inputting a ninth digit results in a error that is recoverable using (CK)
Negative sign is shown in the immediate left hand digit travelling into the ninth digit thereby allowing full eight digit negative numbers
Divide by zero shows zero and "E" in the far left (ninth) digit and is not recoverable
Overflow is shown by the result and  "C" (or "E" if negative) in the far left (ninth) digit and is not recoverable
The change sign can be used in mid-number entry
Negative square roots are not allowed and result in "C" and zero display

The instruction manual on the left measures 73mm x 150mm and is printed in black only.  At this size it can be fitted in the carry case with the calculator.  It is an eight-sided folded booklet with a very good picture describing the keys.  Simple but clear instructions are given along with a comprehensive specification sheet.  It even gives the speed of calculations;

Add/Subtract max. 0.1 sec
Mult./Div. max. 0.6 sec

Printed in Japan ref R-4771494.
