Calculators: Handheld: SCM Smith-Corona 6612

Size (approx):

85mm (max) x 130mm x 26mm (max)  (w,h,d)
Weight 168g excluding batteries but including strap

Power: 6.0V DC, 4 x AA size batteries, 0.6W (note the manual erroneously states 5W).  Also accepts adapter/charger (6V 200mA, 2.4mm plug centre negative) through a top side socket just left of middle..   The on/off switch is located on the top side in the middle.
Case: Chunky two piece matt black plastic case with rounded edges and corners.  There is a flat and flush green display which gives a bright display.  A metal plate sits in its own recess and is printed black with the name and model number.  Keys are large squishy and have a string springiness but work very well.  There is a strong metal tag to the top of the right side with a carrying strap.
Display: 6 digit green VFD display – with an arrow indicator for shifted number.  Numbers display from the left rather than the more normal right.
Features: Basic four function with display shift allowing 12 digit calculations.
Age: est. 1974
Manufacturer: SCM Smith-Corona, made in Japan, serial No. 74802728
Comments: Unusual calculator with its 12 digit precision and solid feel. The original case is soft black plastic with a top and right size zip and an internal tag. There is the word JAPAN embossed on the front. It is possible to zip it up and leave the carrying strap outside.

Components: 1 x cpu:  Mitsubishi MA8186B 2312 (24 pin DIL)
1 x 6 digit VFD display round face single tube.
2 x transistor
10 x diodes
4 x capacitors
2 x resistors
2 x resistor arrays
1 x transformer and sub assembly
Boards: The keyboard assembly sits above the main cpu board (1206K-B) and is joined via 9 stiff wires.
Construction: Remove battery cover and from the rear prize out the bottom section from the battery surround.  Hinge the front off from the top

Logic comments: The Clear Entry key (CE) is used to clear an input number and the (C) key to clear the calculator.
Overflow on the input of a number is suppressed typing in a thirteenth digit is ignored.  When you type in the seventh digit it is not displayed but an arrow lights on the far left to indicate that LSDs exist
The (<>) key shifts the display to the second group of six digits; the least significant digits (LSD).  The manual calls this “Double Mode”
There is automatic constant on all four functions
The negative sign is a “-“ to the far left of the digits thereby allowing full 12-digit negative numbers
An overflow results in all decimal points and the LSD arrow alight and is not recoverable
A divide by zero results in all decimal points and the LSD arrow alight and is not recoverable

manual

The manual measures 122mm x 73mmand has 12 printed pages.  The front is in two colour (black and green) whilst all other pages are black.  In English only (with a few translation typos) it has some good examples and information.  Printed in Japan
