Calculators: Handheld: Sharp Elsimate 8016

Size (approx): 72mm x 128.5mm x 20mm  (w,h,d)
Weight 106g excluding batteries

Power:

3V DC with 2 x AA batteries, rated at 0.4W.  Also accepts adapter EA-17E or rechargeable battery pack EA-18B.  Socket is on top side on the left.  Stated operating time of 8 hours on manganese batteries.  The on/off switch is on the left hand side in line with the Sharp logo.
Case: Two piece plastic case with a base in smooth white and a top section in matt black.  A metallic display surround is printed black and red with the make and model number and designer stripes.  The green display filter is flat and slightly raised.  It gives a clear bright display.  The keys are medium travel with a very squishy action but work well.  Oddly looks like a key is missing as there is a slight depression underneath the (2) key.
Display: 8 digit green VFD  with a ninth (to the right) minus and error indicators
Features: Four standard functions with percentages.
Age: 1975
Manufacturer: Sharp Corporation.  Made in Korea. Serial No. 5832182X from label in battery compartment and on box.
Comments:

Nice compact, heavy calculator with basic functions.  The on/off switch at perfect thumb position on the upper left and side.  The logic is sound though the lack of recovery is annoying.  Typical of this era in design for Sharp.  Bright clear VFD display helps but the metal surround is prone to scratching with all that painted design.  Very similar to the later EL-8016S.

Components: 1 x cpu; Hitachi HD36360 5J 43 (date code September 1975), 28 pin 0.6" width black plastic
1 x 9 digit VFD unit: single glass tube round faced: Futaba 9-CT-22
1 x transistor
5 x diodes
6 x capacitors
3 x resistors
3 x resistor arrays
1 x transformer: TDK 1290 Japan
Boards: Keyboard board is attached to the front by one screw and has ID number F1234CC.  The main CPU board sits loose on top and is hinged off with connecting ribbon of stiff wire and centred using a plastic post.  The ID mark is F1272-A.
Construction: Front panel can be prized away by lifting the lugs in the battery compartment and then gently separating two similar lugs at the bottom.

Logic comments: The (CE) button is used to clear last entry of a number and the (C) to clear the whole calculator.
Overflow on number input is suppressed, keying in a ninth digit is ignored
There is automatic constant on multiply and divide only
An overflow error shows the result and "C" ("E" if negative) in the far right (first) digit and is not recoverable
Divide by zero results in "0.C" and is not recoverable
Negative numbers are flagged by a "-" sign in the far right (first) digit thereby allowing full eight digit negative numbers
It suffers the divide to negative zero bug: key in (-)(1)(=) to show "-1" then (/)(1)(0)(=)(=)(=) etc..  until you get "-0", then one more (=) gives "0"
