Calculators: Handheld: Universal Executive (aka 931)

Size (approx):

65mm x 115mm x 22mm  (w,h,d)
Weight 74g excluding batteries

Power: 9.0V DC, 1 x PP3 size battery.  It accepts an adapter through a socket on the top side, to the far left.  There is a warning on the back panel to remove the battery if running from the mains.
Case: Smart compact design off two-piece black smooth plastic case with full wrap around front brushed aluminium panel.  The vertical edges are rounded no the front and back, giving a smart smooth appearance. Top and bottom panels are heavily ridged.   A plastic panel above the display is printed silver with the make and model. Further black printed text serves as the key labels and have survived well.  A flat purple display filter gives a clean bright display.  The keys are soft but positive and springy.
Display: 8 red LED with bubble lens, with no ninth
Features: 4 function calculator with percentages, change sign and four function memory
Age: 1977
Manufacturer: The back label just states Made in Malaysia, serial No. (inside battery compartment) B86927.
Comments: Very attractive (lady's handbag?) calculator that is obviously branded as a version for the Accuron Executive.  A huge joke that whilst the manual is headed “931” the text thanks you for buying an Accuron.  Lack of a ninth digit lets it down but otherwise a solid calculator.  Original case is soft black plastic with an open top and half-moon cut outs.

Components: 1 x cpu: Texas TMS0972NL KDSN 7706 (date code week 06 of 1977) 28 pin DIL
1 x 8 digit bubble lens red LED with additional full length magnifier; TIL395--8 7637 (date code week 37 1976)
0 x transistor
0 x diodes
0 x capacitors
0 x resistor arrays
0 x resistors
0 x transformer
Boards: The keyboard assembly attached to the front via four screws and to the main cpu board (ref TMS0972 7/931A) by 15 long stiff flat copper wires.
Construction: Very gently squeeze in the front panel and gently lift the back off.

Logic comments: (CE) is used once to cancel the last number entered and (C) to clear the whole calculator.
There is automatic constant on all four functions
Input overflow is suppressed, inputting a ninth digit is ignored
Negative numbers are shown with a "-" in the immediate left hand digit.  As there is no ninth digit you are limited to seven digit negative numbers.  Type in an eight digit number and press (+/-) result in an error which is recoverable using (CE)
The change sign key "(-)" can be used in mid-number entry
Divide by zero shows a flashing "0" digit and is recoverable using (CE)
Overflow shows the result flashing rapidly and is recoverable using (CE)
There is no indication of memory - you have to remember it

box

manual

The box measures 70mm x 120mm and is 25mm deep.  It is printed in two colours (orange and black) and states made in Malaysia.  The calculator just fits in its cover so nothing else was put inside. The very basic manual measures 115mm x 65mm and is a six-sided fold up sheet printed in black only.  Amazingly they did not bother to edit the text as it opens with “Congratulations on your purchase of this Accuron… calculator” !
