It's a Hit!

It turns out that this idea was actually a huge miss at the time.  The Pilkington report (from the Committee of Broadcasting) of June 1962 rejected the Pay-TV idea outright.  The generous may say that's because this particular report dealt with more major issues like the switch from 405 to 625 lines, VHF to UHF bands for TV, reconstitution of the ITA, a second ITV channel and even colour TV - phew!

I suspect the real reasons were a little more uncomfortable; the effective (unregulated) creation of an independent "broadcaster" , the weakening of the grip on TV licences and the detailed audience analysis possible, would have given Choiceview far more power than the BBC.

The reason why this is voted a "Hit" is that eventually (in the early 1990's) BSkyB offered an uncannily similar system via satellite - and under correct regulation.
